Lyon Healy Serial Numbers
Posted By admin On 04.01.21'Martin Handcraft'1931 Vintagebronze lacquer, late model. Good player 1931, s/no 104xxx - literally the last ofthe C-Melody line, lovely !! I don't have a good enoughcamera to capture the real dark vintage lacquer colour - it'sgorgeous. Modernaction, gone are the quirky vintage forked Eb and G# trillkeys. High palm keys all sensibly long - no more 'button' palm keys. Add to that the essential auxiliaryFront-F mechanism, and you have a C-Melody and this is a delight toplay. Intonation is extremely good - a solid powerful hornwith well preserved Martin case andaccessories. NOT FORSALE | <<< My Favourites ! >>> ( and I've just acquired ) v v ***** Coming shortly - more pics ofmy vintage lacquer King C-Mel, with front-F,naturally.... ***** | Lyon & Healy 'Inspiration' ( King stencil - relatively rare) Iaffectionately call her 'Big Ugly'. Verymuch a project and a half.... Quite a rare beast this one,I've only seen one other for sale. After Lyon & Healystopped making their own C-Mels - based around Martin design/tooling -they had stencils mostly made by Buescher. This is the moreelusive King stencil, with classic King domed cups, and, moreimportantly, the auxiliary Front-F mechanism - a rare find on stencilhorns. The silver plating is almost completely worn orabraded from the body, but some remains on the keys - giving a two-toneappearance. A real workhorse. A current project, at themoment, regrettably NOT FOR SALE. |

The aimof this page is to (hopefully) help you to identify the manufacturer, and even possibly the'build year' of your C-Melody. I know you could look on thebell andsay 'Ah - Martin', but sadly that doesn't apply tostencils. So, thetable on the right will have links to a pages showing a selection ofC-Melodysaxes, some I've owned, some I still do, and with the mechanism anddesign features of each manufacturer - the pictures are quite goodresolution, and unprotected, so can be copied and pasted into a suitable graphicspackagefor better viewing, e.g. zooming. Please feel free to dothis, but if youre-use the pictures in any other context, please ask me first, and I'dalso appreciatea mention of this site.
Lyon & Healy 'Own Make' Serial Number List A Guide to Dating Lyon & Healy 'Own Make' Instruments This list is based on an information base of over 60 Lyon & Healy brass instruments which are engraved either 'Own Make' or 'Duplex/Own Make', from the establishment of the factory in 1896 until the largest known serial number. Lyon & Healy Piano Company. Factory Location: Chicago, Illinois Serial Number Dates: 1880 -? History: Lyon & Healy pianos have been manufactured for over a century, beginning in 1880. The Lyon & Healy name was actually produced by Packard Schulz, which also produced names like Washburn & Majestic.
Ratherthan put 'return' links on each page, I've either opened some in a newwindow,or others require the use of your browser 'back arrow' to get back tothis page. It will take awhile to findexamples showing all the differences, and I hope to be able to make a'truth table'as well, for quick checking and identification. Until then, please followthis link to my Q&A page, and check out the excellent pages by Saxpics, Dr Rick, and Cybersax, toidentifywhich manufacturer built your stencil.

Sadly, e.g., allMartin stencils don't haveall the standard Martin features etc. etc. And, some Stencilnames appearon saxes from more than one manufacturer ! Fun, isn't it ? I'm stilllearning a few things myself in the process. A far fromcomprehensive listof Stencil names is at the end of the page- link is on the table opposite - andI'll also set up a gallery of pictures of C-Melody saxes I've owned inthe past,as examples of most manufacturers art. The vast majority ofthe pictureswere taken by (and owned by) me, but, if I've inadvertently usedsomeone else'sexample, I sincerely apologise - drop me an email and I'll eithercredit you, orif you so wish I'll remove the picture.
Below are short lists of serialnumbers for the years ( mostly up to the thirties ) that C-Melody saxeswere produced 'inquantity'. I thought itwould be useful to have them for all the C-Melody manufacturerstogether in oneplace (and in alphabetical order, not preference..). Linksto pages with more comprehensive serial number listings, and furthermodel info, areincluded with each list, as are references to the origins of thedata. I'd just like to say a great big' Thanks ! ' to anyone involved in compiling and/or publishing thoselists - very muchappreciated !!
Please notethat C-Melody 'stencil'serial numbers don't usually correspond with therelevant manufacturers 'own brand name' sequences - there are sometheories asto how you can work the date out, but I'm afraid the answer is usuallyjust ' made in the 1920's.. '
Also be awarethat the serial numbers below weren't just for C-Melody saxes, eachinstrumentproduced was assigned a sequential unique number, so (for example) inJan-1924, 60993 couldhave been a Tenor Sax, 60994 a C-Mel, 60995 a Soprano, etc. etc. - atleastthat's how I understand it ? Thinking about that, it'sprobably morelogical that the numbers were assigned in 'blocks' to maybe a groupC-Mel's,then alto's etc. for a certain production run. Each group of bodiescould thenbe stamped sequentially. Anybody out there know how it really was?
So anyway, you should also beable to use these lists to date some of the vintage saxes of thatperiod.

King/ H N White
Note:- these serial numbers should be taken with a 'pinch of salt', theaccuracy isdoubtful. I've heard from Joe Uebelacker, who has a KingC-Melody s/no34xxx. Going by the published serial numbers, this places it's agesomewherebetween 1893 and 1915 (helpful..) However, on the samewebsite there isan announcement that the 'King C-Melody was introduced around1916-1920' - in fact probably closer to1920 Hrmmmmm.

Lyon& Healy | Made some of their own -see 'Note 1' below |
Masterbilt | I've fleetingly had one,made by Conn |
Pan American | Conn's own stencil, great sax ! Curved (tenor style) neck |
Perfection/ Bruno | also seen as Perfakten /Perfacktone , on other saxes as well |

Silva-Lae/ Naujoks McLaughlin | who also made a great'silver-lay' C-Melody mouthpiece |
Winterroth | Conn stencil, curved(tenor style) neck |
Wurlitzer | Seen as Buescher , Conn, and Martin stencils |
Note 1 - Lyon &Healy either made, designed, or commissioned their 'own' C-Melody saxesat thestart of the era, from parts seemingly supplied by the majormanufacturers. Typically those 'own' models have a strangemix of theMartin body (with bevelled tone-holes), but with the Conn 'mercedes'low Cguard, and either a Martin style neck (straight brace) or a Conn styleneck(curved brace). (but) I'vealso seen one 'Gretsch' stencil with the same mix....
LaterLyon & Healy C-Melody's were pure Buescher or Martinstencils. King also produced a limited number of stencils engraved Lyon &HealyInspiration, usefully with the aux-Front-F key, but without the'double-G'cup. I own one of those - it's my backup C-Mel, checkout BigUgly, alsofeatured at the top of this page.

Where can I buy strings and accessories for my harp?
For a wide variety of music, strings, CDs, books and accessories, please visit www.harp.com.
How do I place a harp order?
To place a retail order for a standard Lyon & Healy lever or pedal harp, simply select the harp style and finish/color and make a 10% refundable, transferable deposit. For a retail special order, a 20% non-refundable deposit is required. Full payment or approved financing is necessary before delivery. To apply for financing, fill out this online credit application with Allegro Credit (an independent finance company). For additional information, please see the General Terms & Conditions listed on our Prices page.
Does Lyon & Healy provide a warranty on its harps?
Yes, the Louis XV Special, Louis XV, Prince William Gold, Styles 8, 3 and 26 (Gold) come with a 10-year limited warranty, pedal harps come with a 5-year limited warranty, and all lever harps come with a 3-year limited warranty.
How long does it take for my harp to be delivered?
Once your harp is completed and ready for delivery, its shipment typically takes 3 to 5 days in the continental US, and outside the US 7 to 10 days. Inclement weather and/or temperatures below 32F or above 90F can delay shipping.
How does your Bounty Program work?
Lyon & Healy or Salvi will apply the original purchase price of any Lyon & Healy or Salvi lever, Chicago Petite 40 or Daphne 40 pedal harp that is less than five years old, in fair condition and traded in by the original owner, toward the purchase of any new Lyon & Healy or Salvi pedal harp of greater value. Under the Bounty Program, one trade-in per customer is allowed. Electric and electroacoustic harps are not included. Contact our sales team at sales@lyonhealy.com or your local harp dealer for additional details. Please have your harp’s serial number and model information readily available.
How does the Rent To Own Program work?
Lyon & Healy and Salvi offer a Rent To Own Program, which provides beginning harpists an affordable opportunity to purchase a new lever, Chicago Petite 40 or Daphne 40 pedal harp after a six-month trial period. The six months rental fee, shipping charges and transit insurance are required in advance. At the end of the six months, there is the option to either return the instrument or purchase it. If the rented harp is purchased, Lyon & Healy or Salvi will apply the six months rental fee toward the purchase price of the instrument. Credit approval and contract required. Continental U.S. only. Please ask for additional details by emailing sales@lyonhealy.com.
What is transit insurance?
This is Transport Insurance on the harp. Each harp must leave Lyon & Healy insured in the event that there is any damage in shipping. This only means it is insured in transit. If you wish for your harp to be insured once you have accepted delivery, you must purchase insurance separately. Lyon & Healy does not insure harps.
How do I care for my harp?
The best tool for cleaning your harp is a simple 100% cotton cloth. This should be used on a regular basis to wipe off the perspiration, dust and oil which can accumulate on the wooden portions of your harp. Our Lyon & Healy Harp Polish can be applied directly to a cotton cloth to help maintain your harp’s beautiful wood finish (to avoid the build-up that frequent polishing can create, it is best to use the polish only once every several months). Use a separate clean cotton cloth to wipe off the brass action and pedals of your harp, along with a small soft-bristled brush for dusting the strings nuts and discs. Do not use any type of metal polish or other liquids on the brass action or pedals as it can adversely affect the special protective metal lacquer finish that is applied to these parts at our shop.
Lyon & Healy Saxophone Serial Numbers
How often should I get my pedal harp regulated?
Lyon & Healy recommends routine regulations for its harps by a member of the Lyon & Healy/Salvi Technicians Guild. The technicians have a thorough understanding of the instrument, plus knowledge of all the technical aspects needed by regulators.
How often should I change my strings?
The quality of your strings affects the sound of your harp – over time, strings lose their tonal quality and can change your harp’s pitch. A general guideline for an advanced student or professional harpist is to change your 1st and 2nd octaves every six months and the 3rd, 4th and 5th octaves and bass wires every year (for a student or enthusiast, add six months for the 1st and 2nd octaves and a year to the rest). We recommend keeping track of the age of each string so you know when it is time to replace them.
How do I find a harp teacher?
While Lyon & Healy does not personally recommend harp teachers, there are a variety of websites that list harp teachers (try entering “harp teachers” into any common search engine). Two of these sites are the American Harp Society at www.harpsociety.org (look under Resources for their Teachers Directory) and the Teachers Near You listing at http://us.harp.com/teachers-us.htm.
Does Lyon & Healy give appraisals on harps?
Lyon & Healy provides two different types of appraisals: Insurance Replacement Values for insurance companies, and Physical Value Evaluations to provide a statement of value of your harp (the latter may only be done with a physical inspection of the harp). Please visit our Appraisal Requests page for more information.
Does Lyon & Healy give appraisals on instruments other than its harps?
Lyon Healy Store
Unfortunately, Lyon & Healy does not have records for any instruments other than the harp and is unable to appraise or provide information on other instruments.
